Firefall
is a somewhat rare event. It can only occur in mid-February, when the
setting sun hits Horse Tail Fall just right. But, that waterfall
doesn't flow at that time of year every year. Even then, the sun must
still make an appearance at sunset to create the magic. In the end, you
need a little luck! Here's my
experience from February 22, 2017. After searching out several
locations, I found my spot about 1 1/2 hours before sunset. Others had
been there for hours. We first started seeing some hint of the Firefall
when the mist from lower on the falls started to turn yellow about 15
minutes before sunset. About 5 minutes later, the color started to
shift
to a light orange. As it did, the color started showing up higher and
higher, and within a few moments, to the top of the falls. And as it
did, it got more intense. Even the mist rising above showed the orange.
It remained this intense yellowish-orange for about 5-6 minutes,
seemingly shifting only with the spread of the mist. About a minute
before sunset, it faded quickly, shifting towards pink, before fading
completely. It was a truly amazing experience. Below is brief
representation of the progression of light.
